Circa 8000 BC Horse and near relatives died out in North America, near the end of the last Ice Age, along with mammoths and other species. Tapir of South America is closest surviving species which remains wild. Specific causes of the local extinctions remain unknown. 

Circa 1500 BC Mayan culture began in Mexico without horses.
